KHENTII AIMAG

Khentii Aimag (province) is the favorite hunting-ground for Chinggis Khaan fans. It is now generally accepted that he was born here, and in particular Dadal soum. The two largest rivers are Kherlen and the Onon and the capital is Ondor khaan, located 330 km from Ulaanbaatar, on the banks of the Kherlen. In Ondor khaan you can visit the ethnology museum that is located in an 18th century palace, with a rich collection of relics and artwork confiscated from the aristocracy after the 1921 revolution.

Dadal is a gorgeous area of lakes, rivers, forests and log huts. At Gurvan nuur (lake) stands a ten metre monument celebrating the 800th anniversary of Chinggis Khaan’s birth.

MOUNT BAYAN ULAAN

Mount Bayan Ulaan is supposed to be where the Secret History of the Mongols was composed. In 1969 archaeologist Kh.Perlee found Avragiin Balgas, believed to be the Palace of Aurug, built by Chinggis Khaan in 1189 as a supply base for his army. In the early 1990s, Japanese archaeologist identified dozens of building foundations, including a palace and a temple, but there is not much here for the tourist except the mineral spring: fill up with sparkling mineral water for 100 MNT a litre. Not far away is a 1990 UNESCO monument, a granite block commemorating the 750th anniversary of the Secret History.

THE BALDAN BEREEVEN KHIID

The Baldan Bereeven Khiid is a well preserved monastery, built in 1700 near the Jargalant River. At its peak, the monastery had housed 5,000 monks, and it trained architects, painters and sculptors. Most of the main building, made of stone, is intact. When built, it had 64 doors and 30 windows.
