Ovorkhangai is home to 38 historic monastic centers and numerous temples, built after the fall of Kharakorum, the grand capital of the Mongol Empire founded by Chinggis Khaan in 1220. Although the Kharakorum was destroyed in 1388, its spirit lives on through the iconic tortoise statues and the revered Erdene Zuu Monastery.
